How to Pull Roving from a Drum Carder USING A Diz (Video Tutorial)
🎥 Watch now: In this video, I demonstrate exactly how I take fiber from my drum carder and pull it into roving using a diz and threader. It’s a satisfying process that’s easier than it looks!
If you want to use the same Diz and Threader I use in the video you can find them here:
Why Pull Roving from a Drum Carder?
Pulling roving directly from your drum carder saves time, keeps your fiber organized, and gives you more control over the consistency of your prep. Instead of peeling off a full batt and drafting later, you can go straight to spinning!
When you use a diz, you guide the fiber through a small hole to create a continuous roving. It’s a great way to get a consistent sized fiber that is ready to spin and honestly… kind of addicting. I love worsted prepped fiber and while I love spinning directly from batts, sometimes I want to spin from roving depending on what king of look to the yarn I am going for.
Supplies You’ll Need for This Fiber Prep Method:
To follow along with the tutorial, here’s what you’ll need:
Drum Carder – your go-to tool for blending and prepping fiber
Fiber – wool, mohair, alpaca, or any blend you love working with
Doffer – to loosen and lift the batt from the drum. This can be a makeshift one out of a knitting needle or a purchased one.
Diz – a small tool with holes used to pull roving (I use my own handmade diz that I sell in my shop).
Threader – helps guide fiber through smaller holes in your diz with ease
Benefits of Using a Handmade Diz for Fiber Prep
Using a diz made with fiber artists in mind can make a huge difference in your workflow. My handmade dizzes are lightweight, comfortable to hold, and designed to handle various fiber types with ease. Paired with a threader, they help you maintain even tension and get the cleanest results possible.
💡 Pro Tip: The smaller the hole, the finer your roving will be. Choose the size based on your spinning style!
