DIY Hank Winder for Handspun Yarn: A Must-Have Tool for Fiber Artists with Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS)

Updated: Sep 17

As a fiber artist living with Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS), managing the physical demands of fiber arts can be challenging. One of the most difficult tasks for me has always been winding hanks of my handspun yarn. The repetitive motion is hard on my joints, which are already prone to pain and subluxation due to hEDS. For those of us with hEDS, everyday activities can be a source of discomfort and strain. The physical effort required for tasks like winding hanks can exacerbate joint pain and increase the risk of injury. Despite the therapeutic joy that fiber arts brings, it’s important to find ways to minimize the physical toll on our bodies.

The Need for an Accessible Hank Winder

Given the amount of yarn I wind regularly, I knew I needed a solution. Purchasing a commercial hank winder can be costly, and they can be hard to find. That’s why I decided to create my own DIY hank winder, and it took me just a few minutes to put together, and it only cost a few bucks!
