Welcome back to the Raw Wool to Roving Series! If you’ve been following along, you’ve learned how to wash and scour raw wool, spin out the excess water, drying wool and now we are moving to how to use a hackle to diz off Roving.
How to Pull Roving / Combed Top with a Hackle and Diz
Typically you would use combs to comb out the wool and then use the hackle to blend the fibers further. From there you would use a diz and diz off combed top. However, in today's video I am using a batt that was prepared using a drum carder, my hackle, and a diz. This allows me to pull roving using a hackle and diz and not the normal combed top that would come off. This allows us to pull roving from the hackles not combed top because since it was prepared with carding and not combing all of the fibers will not be completely parallel to each other and aligned like they are when you comb the fiber correctly.
