Watch the Video: Fiber Diaries #3 - Dyeing Roving with All of my Yellow and Orange Acid Dyes
In this video, I take you along as I dye roving with all of my yellow and orange acid dyes. I swatch all of these onto some beautiful Gulf Coast Native wool roving that I processed from raw fleece. I use the following acid dyes:
Jaquard Sun Yellow in a 1% Depth of Shade (DOS) Stock Solution
Dharma Brilliant Yellow in a 1% DOS Stock Solution
Dharma Golden Poppy in a 1% DOS Stock Solution
Dharma Monarch Orange in a 1% DOS Stock Solution (spoiler alert this color was gorgeous and my favorite out of the 4 colors.
Swatching your colors is crucial for any fiber artist looking to understand how different shades will interact with their chosen fibers. By the end, you’ll have a clear idea of how these colors behave, making it easier to plan your next dyeing project.
Why Yellow and Orange Acid Dyes?
Yellow and orange are some of the most versatile colors in the fiber arts palette. They can stand alone for a sunny, cheerful vibe or blend with other hues to create warm, glowing undertones. Using acid dyes on roving ensures vibrant, long-lasting colors that pop in your spinning and felting projects. In the video, you’ll see how each shade takes to the fiber, offering a range of possibilities from soft pastels to intense, fiery oranges. Some of these dyes were new to me colors, so I swatch them all to get a better understanding of how they will interact with each other and the fiber.
The Swatching Process: Getting the Most from Your Acid Dyes
Swatching is a crucial step in the dyeing process. It allows you to see the true color of the dye on your specific fiber, helping you avoid any surprises when you start your larger projects. In this video, I demonstrate the best techniques for swatching acid dyes on roving, so you get consistent results every time.
By carefully applying each dye to the roving, I create a comprehensive palette of yellow and orange shades. You’ll see how different levels of dye saturation affect the final color and learn tips for achieving the exact shade you’re after.
Tips for Using Yellow and Orange Acid Dyes
When working with yellow and orange dyes, it’s important to consider how these colors will interact with your project. Here are a few tips:
Test small sections first: Swatching on a small piece of roving helps you avoid mistakes on larger projects.
Mixing for custom shades: Don’t be afraid to blend different yellows and oranges to create your unique hue.
Consider the fiber type: Different fibers absorb dye differently, so always test on the same type of fiber you plan to use.
