Fiber Diaries - #1 - Inro and Fiber Prep - Making Roving using a Diz and Drum Carder

Updated: Sep 17

Welcome to the very first episode of Fiber Diaries on YouTube! In this introductory video, I’m thrilled to introduce you to Rebel Stitchers—a modern twist on the traditional fiber and quilt shop. This is where creativity meets craftsmanship, and fiber arts are anything but ordinary.

A Day in the Fiber Studio: Fiber Prep : Making Roving using a Diz and Drum Carder

In this episode, I’m taking you inside the fiber studio for a hands-on day of fiber preparation. We’ll start by combing beautiful Gulf Coast Native fleeces using my DIY wool combs (they may be ugly, but they get the job done). This breed is known for its unique texture and durability, making it a joy to work with. If you didn't know, Gulf Coast Native sheep are actually an endangered breed. They are part of the Shave 'em to Save 'em program.

Next, we’ll move on to the drum carder to card the fiber, and then using a diz we will pull fluffy roving, which is perfect for spinning or felting. I had so much fun making roving using a diz and drum carder.

Why Fiber Preparation Is Key

Proper fiber prep is essential for achieving consistent, high-quality results in your fiber arts projects. Whether you’re spinning, felting, or dyeing, starting with well-prepared fiber ensures that your work is easier and more enjoyable. Plus, it’s a crucial step before we dive into dyeing with acid dyes, which will bring vibrant color to the fibers. I personally love to work with batts as well as roving because my favorite way to spin yarn consists of the woolen prep that these two processes use. When I'm going to be using acid dyes to dye it, I prefer the fiber to be in roving form.
